Although pineapple is one of the best known fruits, it is actually in the herb family – an indication that fruits come in different forms.

The pineapple tree is a perennial tropical plant with spiny, recurved leaves and a short, thick stem. It originated from South America. The fruit itself has as juicy, yellowish, seedless flesh and a covering of floral bracts topped with short, stiff leaves.

The ripe fruit is peeled and eaten fresh, while for commercial purposes the flesh is squeezed and the liquid canned.
