Mango (Mangifera)
Mango is in the sub family of Mangifera which is in the family of Anacardiaceae. It is propagated through its fruit and grows to a very large tree. Its origin is traced to South East Asia but was introduced into Africa by the Portuguese. There are many species of Mangoes including indica, foetida, odora and caesia, among others. Known
as the 'The King of Fruits', its popularity earned it the 'Fruit of the
Orient'. Today mangoes are found all over Nigeria where they are grown for
domestic and commercial purposes. It is usually available in the early part
of the year ( January-April). Mango fruits varry in sizes from almost round to oblong. When ripe the skin is anything between yellow and orange orgreenish yellow. The fruit is juicy and sugary and is rich in vitamin A, with a very good dose of B & C. |
